Tempered glass is ubiquitous in modern architecture, furniture, electronic screens, and transportation. As a material that combines high strength, safety, and aesthetics, why has it become the favorite in modern industrial applications? How is tempered glass produced? Today, TopoGlass will unveil the history and production process behind tempered glass.

The History of Tempered Glass: From Ordinary Glass to "Safety Guardian"

Tempered glass, also known as "toughened glass," is a type of physically strengthened glass. The earliest tempered glass technology dates back to the early 20th century. With the rise of urbanization and the increase in building heights, people began to demand higher strength and safety from glass, leading to the creation of tempered glass.

What makes it unique is that even when it breaks, it does not form sharp shards. Instead, it breaks into small, blunt pieces resembling a honeycomb structure, greatly reducing the risk of injury. As a result, tempered glass is widely used in curtain walls, shower partitions, furniture glass, home appliance panels, door and window systems, and more.

How is Tempered Glass Produced?

As a national high-tech enterprise with over 10 years of glass manufacturing experience, TopoGlass has a mature and perfected production process for tempered glass:

  1. Cutting and Edge Grinding of Raw Sheets
High-quality float glass is cut according to customer requirements, and the edges are ground to prevent stress concentration, which could lead to spontaneous breakage.

  2. Cleaning and Drying
The cut glass is sent through an automatic cleaning line to remove dust and impurities, ensuring the effectiveness of the subsequent tempering process.

  3. High-Temperature Heating
The glass is evenly heated to its softening point (approximately 620°C-680°C) in a tempering furnace.

  4. High-Pressure Cooling TopoGlass
The glass is rapidly cooled with high-pressure cold air, forming a compressive stress layer on the surface and a tensile stress layer inside, achieving the "tempered" effect.

  5. Product Testing and Packaging
After tempering, the glass undergoes multiple quality tests, including stress testing and fragmentation pattern testing, to ensure it meets national and international standards.
